DiskBuddy is the closest thing to a direct counterpart, and we will say so plainly rather than pretend otherwise: it is an excellent, very fast native Mac app, and it is part of the reason Dropit exists. It is written in Swift, ships as a small binary, and its multi-view approach to visualising a drive is the same basic idea as ours.
Where the two genuinely differ is in the cleanup layer and the pricing. Our staging model attaches a safety tier and a written, plain-English reason to every item before it can be queued, refuses to stage protected paths at all, and re-checks each item against the device and inode recorded at staging time before it deletes anything — a guard against the file having been replaced in between. The catalogue of things it knows how to reclaim is also deliberately developer-heavy.
On price, DiskBuddy is a straightforward one-time purchase. Ours starts at $3.50 and rises in published steps as copies sell, with the current step and the number of copies left at it shown live on the pricing page. Both are one-time; ours is cheaper early and the ladder is visible rather than implied.
The last difference is platform. DiskBuddy is a pure native Swift application, which is a real engineering advantage in binary size. Ours is a Rust scan core with a web-technology interface, which is what lets the same visualisation code render the interactive demo on this website that you can drive in your browser before downloading anything.
Waar DiskBuddy wint
- It shipped first, it is proven, and it has real users who like it. That matters and we are not going to argue with it.
- A pure native Swift binary of a few megabytes. Ours is larger, and native AppKit rendering has latency characteristics that web technology has to work to match.
- A more mature, more polished product overall — it has had the time to sand the edges that a new app has not.
- Its interface is the one this category is currently measured against, and its scan speed on large volumes is excellent.
Choose DiskBuddy if you want the proven option today, if you prefer a small pure-native binary, or if you have already used it and like it — it is a good app and there is no reason to switch for the sake of it.

- An interactive demo of every view running on this website, on a realistic 118 GB dataset, so you can drive the actual interface before downloading anything.
- A cleanup safety model with an explicit tier and reason per item, a hard refusal to stage protected system paths, and a device-and-inode re-check immediately before deletion.
- A developer-aware catalogue: Xcode DerivedData, simulator runtimes, node_modules matched against a sibling package.json, Rust target directories matched against Cargo.toml, and the package-manager caches.
- A $3.50 entry price with the whole ladder published, and scanning free forever.
- Light and dark themes, twenty-three interface languages, and full keyboard navigation with a command palette.
Choose Dropit if you want to try all eight views in your browser before installing, if you want every deletion to come with a written reason and a protected-path guard, if you work on a Mac full of build artifacts, or if you would rather start at $3.50.
Vragen
Is Dropit a DiskBuddy clone?
They solve the same problem and both offer multiple visualisations, which is where the resemblance is real. The differences are the safety model around deletion, the developer-oriented cleanup catalogue, the browser demo and the pricing ladder.
Which is faster?
Both read directory metadata in bulk rather than one file at a time. Real-world speed depends far more on your drive and on Full Disk Access than on either app; measure on your own machine.
Can I try before buying?
Yes. Every view on the home page of this site is the real renderer running on a demo dataset, and the downloaded app scans your drive and shows all eight views without paying anything.
