Disk Inventory X is one of the tools that taught Mac users what a treemap is. It first shipped in 2004, it is free, and its source is published under the GPL. If you have searched for a free way to see what is filling a Mac, you have probably been pointed at it.
The difficulty today is age. Its last release, version 1.3, came out in December 2019, and its website lists macOS 10.13 to 10.15 as the supported range. It is built for Intel Macs, so on Apple silicon it runs through Rosetta 2, and on 1 September 2026 Homebrew disabled its cask because it fails Gatekeeper's check.
Dropit covers the same ground — a treemap of the whole drive — as one of eight views, and adds the half Disk Inventory X never set out to do: cleanup with a written safety reason on each item, duplicates, uninstall with leftovers and snapshots. It is a universal binary for Apple silicon and Intel, notarized by Apple, and supports macOS 14 and later. Scanning and every view are free; the cleanup half is a one-time purchase.
If you want free software whose source you can read, Disk Inventory X is the honest answer and this page will not pretend otherwise. If you want a current, maintained app for a recent Mac, that is where the two part ways.
Choose Disk Inventory X if you want free, open-source software, run an Intel Mac on macOS 10.13 to 10.15, and only need a treemap — it did that job well for a long time.

Choose Dropit if you are on Apple silicon or a current macOS, want an app that is maintained and notarized, want more than one view, or want the cleanup half with a reason on every item.
It is built for Intel, so on Apple silicon it needs Rosetta 2. Its last release was version 1.3 in December 2019, and its site lists macOS 10.13 to 10.15.
Homebrew disabled the disk-inventory-x cask on 1 September 2026 with the reason that it fails Gatekeeper's check. The download on the author's website is unchanged.
GrandPerspective is free and open source and also draws a treemap. The scan and all eight views in Dropit are free as well; only the cleanup half is paid.
