CleanMyMac is the biggest name in Mac cleanup software and it is a much wider product than this one. It bundles malware scanning, a maintenance-scripts runner, a large application uninstaller, a menu-bar system monitor and a "Smart Care" one-click routine into a single suite, and MacPaw has been building it for well over a decade.
Dropit is narrower on purpose. It is a disk space analyzer first: the point is to *see* where the space went across eight different visualisations, and then to remove things deliberately. There is no malware scanner, no registry-style maintenance routine and no one-click clean, because a one-click clean is precisely the thing we did not want to build.
The pricing models differ sharply. CleanMyMac is primarily a subscription. This is a one-time purchase on a public price ladder, and the scanning half is free forever. That is a smaller commitment in both directions — you get less software for it.
The philosophical difference is worth stating plainly, because it is the reason this app exists. CleanMyMac optimises for a fast result: press a button, get gigabytes back. We optimise for an understood result: nothing is ever staged without a visible full path and a written reason, and there is no button that deletes things you have not looked at.
Där CleanMyMac vinner
- It does far more. Malware scanning, maintenance routines and performance tooling are real features that we simply do not have and are not planning.
- A long, well-supported track record with a large support organisation behind it, and localisation and documentation to match.
- Its one-click routine is genuinely convenient for people who do not want to think about which cache belongs to which app — and most people do not.
- Its menu-bar monitor runs continuously outside the app, which ours does not.
Choose CleanMyMac if you want one application that also handles malware, maintenance and performance, or if a guided one-click clean is what you actually want from this category.

- Eight interactive views over the real directory tree, so you can see the shape of the problem rather than reading a category total.
- A one-time price on a published ladder, with the analyzer half free forever and no subscription.
- Every stageable item shows its full path and a written reason ("regenerable cache — Chrome rebuilds it", "rebuilt by pnpm install") before you can select it.
- Deeper developer coverage: Xcode DerivedData and simulator runtimes, node_modules and build directories matched structurally against their sibling manifests, and the package-manager caches for npm, pnpm, cargo, Go, pip and Homebrew.
- Nothing leaves the machine. There is no account required to scan and no telemetry from the app.
Choose Dropit if the question you have is "where did my space go", if you want to decide each deletion with the reasoning in front of you, or if you would rather pay once than subscribe.
Frågor
Is CleanMyMac safe to use?
It is a long-established, notarized commercial product from MacPaw and is widely used. Any cleanup tool, ours included, should be judged on whether it shows you the specific files before removing them.
What is the difference between Dropit and CleanMyMac?
CleanMyMac is a broad maintenance suite including malware scanning and performance tools, sold mainly by subscription. This is a focused disk space analyzer and cleaner with eight visualisations, sold once, with the scanning half free forever.
Is there a free alternative to CleanMyMac?
For the analysis half, yes — scanning and all eight views here are free permanently, as are free analyzers such as GrandPerspective (open source) and OmniDiskSweeper (freeware). The cleanup half is what is paid.
