Dropit έναντι OmniDiskSweeper

The first thing to say, and to say before anything else, is that OmniDiskSweeper is free and this is not. The Omni Group have handed out a genuinely useful tool for years and asked nothing for it, and if the free tool solves your problem then the free tool is the right answer. We would rather write that sentence than have you find it out after paying.

What it does, it does with almost no ceremony. You point it at a drive, it walks the tree, and it gives you nested columns of folders sorted largest to smallest. There is no chart to interpret and nothing to learn. For the single most common version of this problem — "something enormous is on this disk and I have no idea what" — you will usually have your answer before a graphical tool has finished drawing.

Dropit is the other shape of the same problem. It renders the same tree eight different ways — treemap, sunburst, flame graph, bubbles, folder cards, top sizes, age map and mind map — because "what is biggest" and "what is oldest" and "what is spread thinly across a thousand small files" are three different questions and a size-sorted list answers only the first. It then adds the half OmniDiskSweeper deliberately does not have: a Quick Wins catalogue, duplicate detection by content, an app uninstaller that chases leftovers, snapshots, and a safety tier with a written reason on every item before it can be staged.

On cost, the fair comparison is narrower than it looks. Scanning and all eight views in this app are free permanently, with no time limit and no account — the same job OmniDiskSweeper does, at the same price. What is paid here is the cleanup half, which OmniDiskSweeper does not attempt at all. So the honest question is not "free versus $3.50", it is "do you want the cleanup half, and is it worth $3.50 to you".

The current OmniDiskSweeper build is 1.16, dated September 2025, and Omni still publishes older builds going back to macOS 10.4 for people on old machines — which is a kind of care most software does not get.
